Study Reveals Violent Video Games Reduce Stress Hormones

In a surprising turn of events in the ongoing debate over video game violence, a recent study suggests that playing violent video games might actually decrease stress hormones in certain players. Contrary to common belief, the study found no increase in aggressive tendencies, indicating a more intricate relationship between video game content and player responses than previously assumed. The findings have been published in the scientific journal Physiology & Behavior.

For years, discussions surrounding the impact of violent video games on behavior have sparked controversy. Previous research often pointed to a potential rise in aggression and stress among players, fueling debates among parents, educators, and policymakers. Fueled by these debates and inconsistencies in earlier findings, researchers conducted a new study to explore the physiological and psychological effects of violent video games more comprehensively.

Gary L. Wagener, a doctoral researcher at the University of Luxembourg and a gamer himself, expressed his interest in the topic. The study involved 54 male participants recruited through various channels. Each participant was randomly assigned to play either a violent or non-violent segment from the popular video game "Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End" for 25 minutes.

To measure the effects of gaming, the researchers used innovative techniques, assessing cortisol and testosterone levels before and after gameplay through saliva samples. Personality traits were evaluated using questionnaires on the "Dark Tetrad," and an Implicit Association Test measured aggressive tendencies.

Unexpectedly, the results showed no significant change in testosterone levels in either group. Even more surprising was the decrease in cortisol levels in the group playing the violent game, suggesting a potential relaxing effect rather than an increase in stress. The Implicit Association Test indicated no significant difference in aggressive cognition between the two groups.

Wagener highlighted the study's unexpected findings, stating, "playing a violent video game had no effect on aggression whatsoever, even taking physiological effects and personality into account, but it provided even beneficial physiological effects." The study also revealed that the personality trait of Machiavellianism moderated this effect, with individuals higher in Machiavellianism showing a more pronounced decrease in cortisol.

Despite shedding light on the potential positive effects of violent video games, the study has its limitations, such as its focus on male participants. The researchers acknowledge the need for more comprehensive studies involving female participants and larger sample sizes to better understand the intricate relationship between video game content, physiological responses, and various personality types.

Wagener concluded, "The average person should take away from this study that there is no clear picture that violent video games are harmful for players. They do not necessarily increase aggression in any way but can even have positive relaxing effects for players." Looking ahead, Wagener hinted at more research as part of his PhD studies, emphasizing the ongoing exploration of violent video game effects at the University of Luxembourg.
