Are Hard Disk Drives Headed Exclusively for Enterprises, with Nvidia and AMD Prioritizing AI over Consumer Markets?

As hard drive shipments take a hit and businesses show a growing interest in diving into the world of AI, the question arises: will major players like Nvidia and AMD eventually leave the consumer market behind?

Recent data from TrendFocus, as reported by Blocks and Files, indicates a substantial decline in hard drive shipments over the past five quarters. Despite the emergence of promising hard drive technologies like SMR and HAMR, it seems that top-tier SSDs are successfully claiming a larger share of the market.

This trend prompts speculation about the fate of consumer-grade graphics cards, which may follow a similar trajectory as hard drives. Nvidia, in particular, is rumored to be shifting away from producing some of the best graphics cards for consumers. According to reports, Nvidia's CEO Jensen Huang communicated a shift towards deep learning in an email to staff, stating that the company is "no longer a graphics company," as noted by the Guru of 3D.

Given Nvidia's significant success in manufacturing leading GPUs for AI training and inference, especially with the recent surge in generative AI, it's conceivable that the company sees a lucrative opportunity in this sector. Previous reports have highlighted a decline in graphics card sales for both Nvidia and its rival AMD. For Nvidia, especially, the GeForce series might be approaching the end of its consumer market life, particularly considering the ongoing supply shortages.

In the current landscape, it appears there's more potential profit in catering to enterprises eager to embrace AI than in targeting budget-conscious consumers. This perspective gains strength, especially when recent generations of GPUs have shown incremental improvements at best. The upcoming RTX 5000 series and subsequent RTX 6000 series could signal the conclusion of Nvidia's consumer-grade graphics lineup, with the company potentially outlining a roadmap for regular releases of enterprise-grade GPUs instead.
