Communication Breakdown: Experimental Quantum Drive Spacecraft Connection Lost

A trial involving a highly contentious propellantless propulsion system known as the quantum drive has encountered failure, as The Debrief reports. Rogue Space Systems disclosed in a press release that its Barry 1 cubesat, launched into orbit by a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket, faced persistent power-system complications. The intended test of the quantum drive, developed by IVO Limited, aimed to showcase the engine's capability to modify the satellite's orbit. However, after over two months in orbit, the test was never initiated, and contact with the satellite ceased on February 9 – a rather anticlimactic conclusion for a demo expected to challenge the laws of physics.

Richard Mansell, founder and President of IVO, expressed disappointment, stating, "Rogue's Barry-1 satellite didn't make it all the way through LEOP (Launch and Early Orbit Phase). Sadly, we never even got to turn on the Drives!"

The concept of the quantum drive, labeled an "impossible engine" by skeptics due to its categorization as a "reactionless drive," challenges Newtonian physics. In this type of engine, no reaction mass (propellant) is used to generate thrust. According to classical physics, this violates the principle that propulsion requires a propellant. IVO claimed its quantum drive could produce an impressive 52 millinewtons of thrust per watt of electricity – twelve times more efficient than existing ion drives on satellites, as noted by Forbes.

While the idea of propellant-free engines is enticing, conventional propellants run out and contribute significantly to a spacecraft's weight, impacting design and increasing launch costs. The quantum drive relies on the mysterious principles of quantum mechanics, leading to both excitement and controversy. However, large-scale tests, especially those conducted in space, remain elusive.

Despite this setback, Mansell remains undeterred, asserting that IVO will proceed with additional orbital tests for its quantum drive. He mentioned, "The overall configuration of the Drives will not change. While waiting for the Barry-1 tests, we have been continuously working to improve the Drives. Those improvements will be part of the next set that goes to space." The circumstances surrounding the cubesat's malfunction before activating the quantum drives raise questions, but IVO aims to conduct future tests to potentially challenge established physics.
