Apple Explores 'Ghost Touches' Problem Impacting Certain Series 9 and Ultra 2 Watches

In an internal communication circulated among Apple Authorized Service Providers this week, Apple acknowledged that it is actively investigating a touch-related issue that is affecting certain Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2 displays.

The memo, obtained by MacRumors, states, "Some customers may report their Apple Watch Series 9 or Apple Watch Ultra 2 is experiencing false touches on their display." Apple noted that customers might describe the problem as "ghost" touches.

This issue can lead to erratic movements of the screen on the affected Apple Watch models or exhibit unexpected behavior without any user input, according to Apple. The memo highlights that this problem may inadvertently initiate a phone call on the Apple Watch and could prevent users from entering the device's passcode.

Apple recommends that customers ensure their Apple Watch's software is updated, hinting that the company is optimistic about resolving the issue through a future watchOS update. However, Apple has not disclosed the extent of the problem or provided a timeline for a potential solution. It remains unclear whether faulty hardware plays a role in this issue.

While the investigation is ongoing, Apple has instructed technicians not to conduct repairs on affected Apple Watch models. Instead, technicians are advised to instruct customers experiencing the problem to perform a force restart on their Apple Watch by simultaneously holding down the Digital Crown and the side button for at least 10 seconds until the Apple logo appears.

The Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2 models were launched in September 2023.
